How to Undervolt Your GPU With MSI Afterburner Safely

Your graphics card sits at 83C in every long session, the fans sound like a hair dryer by the second hour, and the room heats up noticeably during summer evenings. If you undervolt your GPU with MSI Afterburner, you can usually cut power draw by 15 to 30 percent and drop temperatures by 5 to 10 degrees while keeping almost all of your frame rate.

It sounds like a risky tweak, but it is one of the safest things you can do to a graphics card. You are asking the chip to run on less voltage, not more, and if a setting is unstable the worst outcome is a driver crash and a reboot. This guide walks through the process I use on midrange Nvidia cards, with notes for AMD owners at the end.

Why Undervolt Your GPU at All

Manufacturers set voltage with a safety margin so every chip off the production line runs stable, including the weakest ones. Most cards can hold their normal boost clocks with noticeably less voltage than the factory default. That extra voltage turns into heat, and heat makes the card lower its clock speed to protect itself.

On my RTX 3070, stock settings pulled about 220 W in Cyberpunk 2077 and hovered at 76C with the fans at 2100 RPM. After undervolting to 1905 MHz at 0.900 V, it pulled around 165 W, settled at 67C, and the fans dropped to about 1500 RPM. Average frame rate went from 71 to 70 FPS. One frame for 55 W less heat dumped into the case is an easy trade.

What You Need Before Starting

  • MSI Afterburner. It works on cards from any brand, not only MSI. Download it from the official MSI site only.
  • A stress test or demanding game. A built-in benchmark loop works, or a graphically heavy game you play often.
  • A monitoring overlay. Afterburner includes one through RivaTuner. If you are not used to reading the numbers, the guide on reading an FPS overlay and finding your real bottleneck explains what to watch.
  • About an hour for the first attempt, plus a few evenings of normal gaming to confirm stability.

Note your stock numbers first. Run your test for 10 minutes and write down the average FPS, the peak temperature, the power draw, the core clock and the voltage. You need these to judge whether the undervolt was worth it.

How to Undervolt Your GPU Step by Step

  1. Open the curve editor. In Afterburner, press Ctrl+F. You will see a graph with voltage on the bottom axis and clock speed on the side.
  2. Find your target point. Pick a voltage to aim for. For most Nvidia 30 and 40 series cards, 0.850 V to 0.925 V is a good starting range. Pick 0.900 V for your first try.
  3. Lower the whole curve. In the main window, drag the core clock slider down by about 200 MHz and click Apply. This drops every point on the curve so you can raise just one.
  4. Raise the target point. In the curve editor, click the point at 0.900 V and drag it up to your stock boost clock. If your card boosted to 1905 MHz at stock, set it there.
  5. Flatten everything after it. Click the 0.900 V point, hold Shift, click the far right end of the curve to select the rest, then drag one of those points down below your target. Click Apply. The curve should now go flat at your target, meaning the card will not use more than 0.900 V.
  6. Test it. Run your stress test or game for 20 to 30 minutes and watch for crashes, artefacts or stutter.
  7. Save the profile. If it holds, click the save icon and assign it to a profile slot. Tick "Apply overclocking at system startup" only after you are confident it is stable.

Finding the Stable Sweet Spot

Your first setting will either be stable or not. Either way, you adjust in small steps.

If it crashed, the game froze, or you saw flickering coloured blocks, lower the clock at that voltage point by 15 MHz and test again. If it ran perfectly, you can try raising the clock by 15 MHz or try the same clock at a slightly lower voltage like 0.875 V. Keep a simple log in a notepad file: voltage, clock, result. After four or five rounds you will find a point where the card is stable and efficient.

Card (example)Typical stable undervoltUsual power saving
RTX 3060 Ti1860 to 1920 MHz at 0.875 V40 to 50 W
RTX 30701890 to 1950 MHz at 0.900 V45 to 60 W
RTX 40702600 to 2700 MHz at 0.925 V25 to 40 W

Treat these as starting points, not promises. Two cards of the same model can differ by 50 MHz at the same voltage.

Do Not Trust a Short Benchmark as Proof of Stability

Most undervolting tutorials tell you to run a ten-minute benchmark loop and call it done if nothing crashes. I have been burned by that more than once.

Synthetic benchmarks tend to hold the GPU at a constant, heavy load. Real games do not. They swing between loading screens, menus, cutscenes and heavy combat, and that rapid shifting between low and high clocks is exactly where a marginal undervolt fails. My first 3070 profile passed 45 minutes of a stress test and then crashed in a light indie game at the main menu, two nights in a row.

The fix is a longer, more varied test. After the benchmark passes, play your normal library for a week with the overlay visible. Include at least one game with lots of menu switching or alt-tabbing. If anything crashes to desktop with a driver error, back off 15 MHz and keep going. Stability you trust after a week of real play is worth far more than a clean benchmark score.

Notes for AMD Owners and Common Problems

AMD cards are easier in some ways. Open AMD Software, go to Performance, then Tuning, and enable manual tuning. Lower the voltage slider in steps of 10 to 25 mV and test as above. Afterburner's curve editor does not work the same way on Radeon cards, so stick to AMD's own tools there.

Driver updates sometimes reset or conflict with saved profiles. After a major driver update, check that your profile still applies, and retest briefly. If you also use upscaling, remember that DLSS or FSR lowers GPU load, which can hide an unstable undervolt; test with it off too. The comparison of DLSS, FSR and XeSS upscaling modes explains how each one shifts the load.

Finally, an undervolt and better cooling stack. If your case airflow is poor, fixing that first is often a bigger win, as the testing in air cooler vs AIO on a midrange PC shows for CPUs.

FAQ

Can undervolting damage my GPU?

No. Lowering voltage reduces heat and electrical stress on the chip. An unstable setting causes crashes or visual glitches, not hardware damage. Reset Afterburner to default and everything returns to stock.

Does undervolting void the warranty?

Generally not, because it is a software setting that does not modify the card and resets with one click. Policies vary by manufacturer, so check your card's terms if you are worried.

Will undervolting lower my FPS?

Usually only by 0 to 3 percent, and sometimes it raises FPS because the cooler card holds boost clocks longer. If you see a bigger drop, your target clock is set too low for the chosen voltage.

Do I need to keep MSI Afterburner running?

Yes, the undervolt only applies while Afterburner is running. Set it to start with Windows and apply your profile at startup once you have confirmed stability. It uses very little memory or CPU.
